RE: Newbie Question easiest winter route to tow Alberta to BC

Regarding the "hills around Golden", they're much easier to navigate since the completion of the bridges east of Golden. We were pleasantly surprized when we drove through there in September. Also, the DriveBC website has webcams that will give a good idea of the road surface conditions. One is at the summit of Rogers Pass. Have a good trip.

RE: Passenger or co-pilot?

As I sit here in the nav seat, early on a Sunday morning, I'm looking at maps, campground directories, camera/case, purse, notebook, computer, magazines and assorted other stuff that my navigator requires to properly perform her function (she said it, not me). It's all neatly organized, but it is THERE. If our bus was a front entry, I'm not sure where all this would be stored; I know it would be a pain to move it each time we needed to open the door. Maybe the DP folks have solved this problem; we didn't have to. Oh, and keep thinking about these sorts of questions, regardless of what mtrumpet says. These are the things that will drive you nuts if you buy a floorplan that doesn't work for you. Good luck.

RE: 1st time Canadian snowbird

flteng & boatescape... We did our first ever snowbird trip last winter from Calgary to Mexico. The general plan was to stay in several different places (Vegas, Phoenix, Casa Grande, Puerto Penasco, Yuma, San Diego, Palm Springs), with a view to finding a place to stay for a longer time in future years. We kept a fairly detailed website with pictures and videos that may provide some insight. See signature below for link to the website. We too suffered from information overload before leaving, after viewing too many websites and getting (sometimes) conflicting opinions. Comments after our first trip:had a great timedid not stay long enough in any one spot; we really need a week or two to get the feel of a placeMexico was greatdriving I-15 was much easier than anticipated, even though the weather was less than ideal (see early pictures)California is nice, but expensivewe will plan on a longer trip next time Can't comment on satellite other than to say that we just signed up with Star Choice for home as well as travelling...they were very helpful in making sure the RV was able to receive programming properly wherever we happened to be. Finally, we did not reserve more than 2 weeks ahead and only were turned down by one campground in Yuma. However, we were only reserving for 5-6 day stays. We did have reservations in Mexico and in Las Vegas which was our first low latitude stop. We wanted to ensure we had a spot to rest after the long drive down. Have a great snowbird experience!! If you have further questions, please feel free to PM.

RE: Pressure Washer for Washing Motorhome

I own a pressure washer and don't use it above the frame of the motor home. Great for cleaning tires, mud flaps, etc. But it does nasty things to decals. If your RV has a painted finish (rather than decals) it may be okay. My solution for the body is a large soft brush that attaches to the garden hose. Lots of water and elbow grease, with a beer chaser on a hot day. ...Graham

RE: Las Vegas Resort (Holiday Travel Park)

Stayed at Las Vegas Resort in January 2008 for a few days. DW will not go back. Unfortunately, it was crowded, paved (no flora) and (relatively speaking) unfriendly. When we returned to Las Vegas later in our winter trip, we stayed at Oasis...much better in terms of site size, people (campers and staff), noise levels. Of course, you said you didn't want the "resort" type of park, so it might be a non-starter for you anyhow.

RE: Gimli Glider

Did anyone catch the recent news? One of the boys that were almost run down by the Gimli Glider has had another run it with an airplane. He was recently driving down a highway and was run off the road by a Cessna 207 doing an emergency landing on the highway. What are the odds?? See http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2008/08/08/plane-highwya.html

RE: Disconnect toad from Class A's on Marine Hwy??

Disconnect the toad to save money! You are paying for the extra 3 feet of tow bar and not getting the advantage of the driver rate. It is also easier to get the vehicles on and off the ferry. I asked the same question of BC Ferries a couple of years ago. You're right about saving money BUT, if you disconnect, the car and the motor home go into different lineups. If it's busy, there's a chance you both might not get boarded on the same ferry. At least that's what they told me. ...Graham

RE: Kananaskis camping and fishing

Nicest CG just west of Alberta is Fairmont Hot Springs, about 2 hours from Banff. Full hookups and large hot pool. Lots of golf in the area.

RE: Mountain Pass Directory

I asked for the same info awhile back for BC. sidehillsoup asked a friend in the BC government whether there was a publication. As far as I know, he never received a reply, so I assume there isn't one for BC. However, this forum is normally very good at providing info based on highway numbers.

RE: The Alaska Highway this week

Great report and pictures Murray. And the lack of snow isn't surprizing. If you want snow, don't go to Yukon. Calgary forecast for the weekend...snow starting Friday afternoon and will end sometime on Monday...maybe. Temps will not be above zero. And today it's 18 Celsius in my back yard! No wonder we all get spring colds! Murray, you'll be happy to be in Kelowna.

RE: Taking our Motorhome into Canada

Just like the US, Canadian border guards act on behalf of both the federal (Canada-wide) government and the specific provincial government they're located in. So the rules differ slightly depending on what state you're coming from and the province you're entering. In the past 10 months, we have crossed SK-ND, AB-MT, ID-BC and WA-BC. In each case, the rules were slightly different. Follow the advice to phone ahead if you have anything out of the ordinary...otherwise, just be polite and the guards will be likewise. We haven't had a problem in any of our crossings.

RE: The Reef

Back to the OP's original question regarding reservations... we were in Puerto Penasco in mid-February, and drove the toad to the Reef to check it out. DW asked the guy in the office about beach front site availability and was told "nothing available". So we walked thru the park, and came back 15 minutes later with a list of alternative (non-beachfront) sites. Spoke to the girl (not the guy), and after looking at our list, she politely asked if we wouldn't prefer a beachfront site! We took the beachfront and were very happy with our stay at the Reef. See our website (below) for pictures if you're curious.

RE: Whose on the road in the wind and severe weather warnings?

We're currently camped in Desert Hot Springs (near Palm Springs). Drove the toad down I-10 today and it was hairy. Will not take the motor home out until the wind gusts decrease. Weather forecast says that Monday will be better. Stay safe everyone. Graham

RE: Mexico Boarder crossing

We came thru Lukeville last week and I think the hours are 6am to 10pm at the border crossing. EDIT: I think I'm losing it...we ALSO went through Algodones last week...it's Algodones that has 6am-10pm hours. Not sure about Lukeville. Sorry.:o

RE: Puerto Penasco

I second the comments from kalynzoo. We've been at Playa d'Oro for the past week on our first visit to PP, and have enjoyed it. Town is friendly and easy to get around in, once you get your bearings. We're moving to the Reef in a couple of days to try out their beach. We were surprized that we were able to get a beachfront site with no reservation. All in all, a good Mexico experience.

RE: Spots on the beach

We visited The Reef in Pto Penasco on Feb 7 and counted 10 rigs in the boondocking area; looked like lots of space. Also lots of space in the main CG although don't know how much of it is booked, but not occupied. Graham

RE: West coast update!!

We're in Puerto Penasco. Playa d'Oro - 80-90% full although there have been sites available each night we've been here. Playa Bonita - drove through two days ago... appears to be the same as PdO The Reef - visited the office yesterday; although beachfront sites are almost fully booked, there's lots of room in the standard spots. Counted 10 rigs on the boondocking area to the east of the Reef office. Graham

RE: New TOAD for or RV in England

dazza... Of course, it will take 3-4 trips to get your whole family anywhere, depending on the size of the dogs! We have a 2006 SmartCar. Is yours newer and have you checked yet on towing 4 down? Ours can't be towed either four or two down, but must be trailered. ...Graham

RE: Dog across border

We entered the US from Canada twice in September 07 (two different border crossings into two different states). In both cases, dog food was not a problem provided it was not "beef" based (chicken and lamb were okay) and provided it was in its original packaging. We were also told by the US Border Patrol that dog food purchased in the US which was beef based was able to be brought back into the US provided we had the sales receipt to show where it was purchased. We did have one package of dog treats "taken". However, the border patrol agent sat in our RV and fed most of them to the dogs before taking away the package! It was a slow day, but it put a human (or humane) face on the whole process.

RE: Where Ya Going

Leaving mid-January for Vegas, Phoenix and then Mexico. Praying to the weather gods for 3 good days to get out of the snow/ice.
